Thoughts from the HRF Community
Obi Nwosu
I just wrapped up spending a few days interacting with activists in the Human Rights Foundation’s network along with a variety of Bitcoin developers.
My main takeaway: There is a renewed focus on practical, on-the-ground usage that offers a seamless experience for users — both in terms of spending and earning Bitcoin within the so-called “real world.”
While the western world continues to focus on Bitcoin as a store-of-value story, the rest of the world — the Global Majority — is also focused on medium-of-exchange. (Although recent announcements from Cash App and Square give hope that this situation is changing.) On this and the privacy topic, I describe these users as “living in the future.”
The trend plays directly to Fedi’s strengths, increasing my already high confidence and enthusiasm for Fedi’s direction. This is further underscored by the increasing awareness of privacy’s vital role — a feature that is not only our biggest focus but the true unlocker for fulfilling the medium-of-exchange use case.
Real-world examples include the Mini-App integrations that connect the Bitcoin within Fedi wallets to conventional local payment systems. Examples include Minmo and Tando in Kenya, and (coming soon) MoneyBadger in South Africa.
More to come on related fronts.
