Buy Bitcoin Through Someone You Trust with the Minmo Mini App on Fedi
In many communities, the most trusted way to buy and sell Bitcoin isn't an app — it's a person. It’s someone you already know and whose reputation you trust based on their role in your community.
Minmo is the tool that turns that person into the community’s trusted Bitcoin agent (someone from whom you can buy or sell bitcoin), and you can now reach them directly as a Mini App on Fedi.
Evolving into a Community-based Tool
Founded in Kenya in 2025, Minmo was created to make Bitcoin easier to buy. Although Kenya has tools like Tando, which make spending bitcoin easier, the country hasn’t seen any tools that make buying bitcoin just as easy.
Minmo started off as a placeholder tool for every member of the Bitsacco (a Bitcoin-based savings and credit app) to buy/sell bitcoin from within their Community. The Minmo pilot version came to life within Fedi as a simple Mini App, built specifically to allow members of communities like AfriBit to pay for internet access with Bitcoin as part of the SateNet initiative.
Swaps were initiated via the Minmo Swap Link embedded on Fedi, and payments were made via M-PESA and settled in bitcoin within the Fedi wallet. Within seconds, amounts as little as 20 shillings get converted into bitcoin, and then into a whole day of internet access for the user.
Minmo gives community members the infrastructure to run their own Bitcoin exchange service. Each agent gets a personal Swap Link, which is a URL that can be shared over WhatsApp, posted on social media, or embedded anywhere online. This same Swap Link can be added to your community on Fedi as a Mini App.
“Minmo is a simple tool that anyone can use to buy bitcoin,” said Nombuyiselo Murage, co-founder and Head of Operations of Minmo. “And Fedi made it easy and accessible for Kenyans to use. As a new bitcoiner myself, I understand that complex tools make the thought of acquiring bitcoin scary, but when you buy bitcoin from a community member, and you trust a platform that is simple and familiar, then buying bitcoin is more approachable.”
Kenyan Communities on Fedi like Bitsacco have added Minmo alongside Tando as go-to Community Mini Apps, as the apps provide the perfect one-two punch for buying and spending Bitcoin, respectively.
Minmo’s current version is now live in the Fedi Mini App catalog. However, this isn’t the final iteration of Minmo — the team is ready to take it global.
“Now that we’ve proved our concept, we’re ready to bring the opportunity for community leaders to be Bitcoin agents anywhere in the world,” said Jodom Konuko, founder and CEO of Minmo. “They can serve their communities and beyond within Fedi through their personal Swap Links. We can’t wait for the global rollout to happen.”
While Minmo users interact with Minmo via Swap Links that can be embedded in Fedi as a Mini App, Minmo agents manage liquidity and fulfill swaps in real time with the Minmo app. The Minmo app is built on the Fedimint protocol, the same one on which Fedi is built.
“Aside from contributing to Fedimint for years, it was natural for us as Minmo to gravitate toward the protocol because it's community and privacy-focused,” said Konuko.
