Win bitcoin for creating Fedimint modules that solve real world problems

Win bitcoin for creating Fedimint modules that solve real world problems

On January the 3rd 2009 the world changed.

With the now famous message “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”, bitcoin – the world's first global, honest, sound money – was born, and Satoshi Nakamoto gave the world a unique gift.

To celebrate Bitcoin's 14th birthday, Fedi and Epoch (an upcoming capital provider focused on supporting layer 2 and 3 Bitcoin protocols) are hosting a competition to mark this occasion.

At Fedi we believe that Fedimint will become the ideal open platform for the delivery of consensus based applications on the internet.

As an open source custody platform, Fedimint is a unique place where you can not only store your bitcoin, but also, extend the functionality of your bitcoin to add privacy, smart contracts or anything else you can imagine within the scope of a community.

We’re so excited to see what the broader Fedimint community can achieve and what ideas there are to extend Fedimint to solve real world problems in bitcoin.

So with that in mind, we are offering a 2.1 BTC bounty – to be claimed by the 31st of January – to an individual or team who can code up a Fedimint module that will have a significant real world benefit.

To guide this effort some examples we believe would have a real world benefit include:

  • The ability to operate a communal savings pool to accumulate bitcoin for a large project.

  • The ability to store value in a local currency or dollars.

  • The ability to receive payments privately via static QR codes or links (e.g. bolt12 offers).

  • The ability to operate a communal vote based spending pool (e.g. like a Sacco).

How it works

First form a team. Join the Fedimint discord for technical support and questions on modularisation, and come up with an idea.

Code up, design, or document your idea to the best of your ability and let us know where you’re at by the closing date on 31st January 2023

The Fedi team will assess the applications and make awards for the following bounties:

  1. First place - 210 million satoshis and a commitment to support this module in the Fedi product.

  2. Runner up - Two awards of 21 million satoshis.

  3. Honorable mention - Three awards of 2.1 million satoshis.

Requirements for submission

To submit a project, please complete this form. We’ll need to know:

  • Name or Nym (anonymous submissions welcome).

  • Email (we’ll need a way of contact you).

  • Link to public github repo.

  • A short description of your project.

From your github repo, feel free to be as detailed as you need to describe your project. We encourage links to other resources, figma design files or videos.

Assessment

We’re moving fast with this hackathon and we know it may be early to see fully implemented modules for Fedimint. But, we’re interested in seeing where the open source community is at right now, what ideas exist and how quickly they could be implemented for Fedimint.

As such, we expect we will have to assess the submissions on a relative basis. With this in mind we will provide preference based on the following criteria:

  • Preference for solutions that provide a clear solution to an existing problem in the real world globally.

  • Preference for submissions that include implementable code.

  • Preference for completeness of a solution (documentation, design, example install, working code and implementation in line with existing Fedimint code base).

We will aim to announce winners no later than February 5th.
